Our Story
Everything starts with Mochi
At Potomac Fur Mama, everything starts with Mochi. She’s the reason we began reading ingredient labels more carefully, asking questions about sourcing, and paying closer attention to what goes into every bite.
It started with an ordinary bag of treats and an ingredient list we couldn’t finish reading out loud. Glycerin. “Natural flavor.” A preservative we had to look up. None of it was unusual — that was the part that bothered us. It was simply what most treats are.
Once you care deeply about what nourishes your own family, it’s only natural to want the same for the companions who share your life. So we started making them ourselves, in small batches, with one ingredient we could name without hesitating.
The chief taste tester
Mochi has strong opinions and no interest in marketing. She either eats it or she doesn’t, and there is no negotiating. That turned out to be exactly the quality standard we needed — nothing leaves our kitchen that she hasn’t already approved, enthusiastically and usually loudly.
She reminds us every day to choose better ingredients, take no shortcuts, and make every treat with purpose — with honesty, care, and standards we will never compromise.
Small on purpose
We’re a small, local operation, and we intend to stay one for a while. Being hands-on lets us oversee every step of the process, from selecting ingredients to preparing each batch. We know which boat the salmon came off and which run it’s from. We know what every pouch was tested for before it was sealed.
That gets harder at scale, and plenty of brands hand it off to a co-packer once the volume arrives. We’d rather grow slowly and keep our hands on it.
No shortcuts, no unnecessary fillers, and no compromises on quality. Just real ingredients, thoughtfully prepared, for the companions who are family.
